To have received Christ early in youth has a couple implications: 1) I have a relatively uneventful or non-dramatic pre-salvation narrative which basically means that I was a pretty good kid growing up, haha. This meant 2) I had to come to terms with what it meant to be a sinner and why I needed a Savior. During my adolescence, my parents embraced their faith and in turn, blessed me with a thorough Christian upbringing. Jesus was a man I knew of very well, and his parables were literary texts that I studied right along with Aesop’s Fables and the works of the clever Dr. Seuss. However, it wasn’t until the 8th grade when I finally understood that my salvation came at a cost, and that Christ extended an invitation to respond to this eternal grace. Since then, my life has been a funky exploration of what love is, and why I accept it so eagerly without even knowing it sometimes. Years later, I have to admit that I feel as though my walk has been only ever been a crawl, and in other occasions, I see the world from a bird’s eye view during moments when I’m soaring with my Maker; and it is breathtaking. Oh how this life is full of glorious paradoxes. This life is full of joy, yet overwhelmed with sorrow too. I’m growing to be like Christ, but as time passes, I see clearer my soul’s blemish. I am 21, but my heart still rebels like a 12 year old. I am now a man, but I still need to feel loved like a child. I’m a sinner who needs a Savior-that is, one who can redeem any sad paradox, and rescue me from my grave and breathe life into my dry bones, because Satan is a dog and he likes bones.

“I haven’t yet met a musician that doesn’t agree that music is a language. One of the things to consider is that when we compare the two, music and language, we realize that they really serve the same purpose. In a nutshell, they are both forms of communication. They’re both forms of expression. It’s a way of getting something that’s inside of us out, and a lot of times the purpose is to convey a message or feeling to someone else, and the other person usually understands what we’re saying.” – Victor Wooten
